Sunlight has many health benefits for man. It is used in the photosynthesis of plants that is very important for life on this planet Earth. Without sunlight, the the Earth will be lifeless, dark and void.
With the aid of sunlight, our body produces vitamin D for strong bones, teeth, and nails. As the sunlight strikes our skin, substances called ergosterols in oil glands beneath our skin are irradiated and transformed by ultraviolet light into viosterol, and is then converted into ergocalciferol, which is a form of Vitamin D.
Sunlight is good for hypertensive people; it lowers high blood pressure. It has beneficial effects for the heart. Exercising under the sun strengthens the heart, and allows it to rest more as it pumps more blood which results to a lower pulse rate. Sunlight alone can lower blood pressure by 8%, and 15% when combined with physical exercise.
Sunlight is good for people with diabetes. It lowers excessively high levels of sugar in the body. Sunlight causes the stored sugar or glycogen in the muscles and liver to be increased throughout the body ,thus lowering the blood sugar.
Sunlight is good in preventing heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterols in the body. This is done when ergosterols are converted by ultraviolet light to viosterols, and finally to ergocalciferols as vitamin D. Ergosterols are component of fungal cell membranes that serve the same function as cholesterols in animal cells. When much of these ergosterols or cholesterols are converted by sunlight into vitamin D, cholesterols from the body are sent to replace them, thus lowering the cholesterol level in the blood. An average of 13% reduction in blood cholesterol can be achieved after two hours exposure to sunlight.
Sunlight is also good in preventing the harmful effects of stress. Sunlight calms the nerves, and increases insulin secretion by the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Patients suffering from gastric and duodenal ulcers, thought to be caused by stress, have been found to improve under the beneficial effects of sunlight.
Sunlight can destroy harmful bacteria, and can be used in treating bacterial infections. Together with fresh air, it is an effective treatment for tuberculosis. Tuberculosis of the lung, bone, and skin are greatly helped by exposure to sunlight. Streptococcal and fungal infections and other infectious diseases such as flu, common cold, and even the dangerous spinal meningitis are reduced by the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects of sunlight.
Sunlight is good in water purification as is manifest in many bottled purified water stores and stations. In this water purification system, the water is exposed to ultraviolet rays to kill harmful bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. Sunlight is also an effective killer of the dangerous water-born bacteria in cholera, typhoid, bacillary dysentery, and hepatitis.
Sunlight can also be used to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis and acne. It keeps psoriasis in control, and sterilizes acne. Sunlight does not only kills bacteria on the skin, but it converts natural oils on skin into bactericidal agents.
Sunlight strengthens the immune system. When exposed to sunlight, the body produces more white cells, the fighter cells that ward off infections and other diseases. Sunlight increases the number of T-lympocytes, the most powerful germ killer in the body. Lympocytes produce more antibodies, such as the gamma globulins when the body is exposed to sunlight. Neutrophils, the common white blood cells are stimulated to chew up twice as much harmful bacteria after sunlight exposure.
Sunlight is beneficial to people with gout. Ultraviolet rays increases the excretion of uric acid from the body. Sunlight is also good in the treatment of arthritis.
Sunlight helps destroy most of the toxic chemicals that we ingest from contaminated water, and from polluted air, such as cobalt, mercury, lead, benzene, fluoride, manganese, cadmium, and pesticides. Ultraviolet rays increase the production of enzymes in the body which eliminate these toxic chemicals by metabolizing them.
Sunlight cleanses our environment: the air, lakes, rivers, mountains, the oceans, and other bodies of water. Creeks and canals will stink without sunlight. Marine lives will not thrive, and plants will not bear fruits without sunlight.
Sunlight cleanses our homes and surroundings too. It kills air-borne bacteria and fungi to ward off diseases.
